My mom and I traveled to New York City in January and got to experience a real winter season. To stay warm and comfortable, I had to layer up with coats, leggings, hats, and comfortable shoes. I noticed that New Yorkers wore boots a lot to walk on snowy streets. I also learned that having high-quality fabrics like cotton, cashmere, and wool is not a luxury but a necessity. Based on my experience, I have come up with a list of 10 must-have items to survive winter in style. Please feel free to add more as part of the comments section, I would love to know what else you consider a must have for winter season.
1. WOOL COAT
ARITZIA Invest in quality by choosing a wool coat that will remain a timeless addition to your wardrobe. It’s a wise decision to splurge a little on a coat that will last you a lifetime.
2. PUFFER COAT

3. WOOL BEANIE
ARITZIA It is essential to have a hat made of wool, as it offers exceptional comfort and warmth. During my recent trip, I made the mistake of wearing a polyester hat and regretted it immediately. The fabric was so itchy that I couldn’t keep it on for long, and it left my head feeling irritated and uncomfortable.
4. ALPACA GLOVES
ETSY I have to say, even though my gloves weren’t top-notch quality, they were the most valuable item I brought with me during my trip to New York. I highly recommend alpaca or wool gloves as an absolute must-have if you’re planning on facing the chilly weather outside.
5. WOOL OR CASHMERE NECK WARMER
ETSY Wearing a neck warmer is just as crucial as gloves in the chilly months. I purchased a set of five items from Amazon, which included gloves, earmuffs, a neck warmer, socks, and a hat. Although the quality of the neck warmer wasn’t great, I ended up wearing it quite frequently, which brought the cost per wear down to zero. Therefore, I strongly advise selecting a neck warmer made of high-quality fabric for maximum warmth and comfort.
6. LEATHER COMBAT BOOTS
COLE HAAN I noticed something interesting while wandering around the streets of New York – it seems that the women here have a penchant for pairing their winter outfits with combat boots. It’s a practical choice, given the unpredictable weather that can range from snowy to rainy. Not only do the boots keep their feet dry and warm, but they also add a touch of style when worn with the right clothing items.
7. SNEAKERS
ADIDAS SAMBA WOMEN During chilly months, a good pair of sneakers is an absolute necessity, especially if you plan on running errands or walking long distances.
8. LEGGINGS WITH FLEECE LINING
LEGGINGS WITH FLEECE LINING I think I couldn’t survive winter without the leggings with fleece lining. I wore them underneath my trousers and pants every time we were going to go out. They kept me warm and they are amazingly comfortable.
