New York Winter Outfits: Transitioning from Spring

Let me tell you something, spring in New York is super unpredictable. As a California resident and used to San Diego weather, I think that sweaters and coats were a must for all our spring outfits in New York in April month. The temperature was about 60°F degrees on average and was so difficult to not dress with cozy clothes. Be prepared for occasional rain showers and chilly mornings. The city looks beautiful when it rains, but the slush and cold can be challenging, so practical clothing and accessories are essential. Here are the 3 New York Outfits and a little guide of places to visit when you are in New York, Manhattan.

Preparing for Spring in New York

Understanding the Weather

As the winter months come to an end, New York City begins to transition into spring. However, the weather can be unpredictable, with temperatures fluctuating between warm and cold. Spring in NYC typically starts in late March and lasts until early May, with average temperatures ranging from 40°F to 60°F (4°C to 15°C). Be prepared for occasional rain showers and chilly mornings, but also enjoy the warmer afternoons. This means you might experience a brisk, winter-like morning followed by a pleasantly warm afternoon, so dressing appropriately is key.

Outfit 1 – Cashmere Sweater at the Brooklyn Bridge

Layering is key to stay warm and stylish during the spring season in NYC.

Ok, so for visiting the Brooklyn Bridge in April, with a temperature of 60°F, I decided to wear as spring outfit a cashmere sweater, faux leather leggings and my most comfortable white adidas sneakers I own. I was very cozy and warm so no need to wear a coat.

Layering for Spring

Wearing layers is key to staying warm and stylish during the spring season in NYC. Start with a base layer of breathable tops and leggings or tights, such as fleece-lined tights from Free People. These tights are perfect for providing that extra bit of warmth without sacrificing style. Add a lightweight sweater or cardigan for additional warmth, and finish with a waterproof jacket or windbreaker to protect against the elements. Don’t forget to wear warm socks and gloves on those chilly mornings, and swap them out for lighter accessories as the day warms up. This way, you can stay comfortable no matter how the weather changes throughout the day.

The wind chill at Brooklyn Bridge that nobody tells you about

When visiting the Brooklyn Bridge you will notice wind. This is because the bridge was designed with that purpose, the bridge’s deck is supported by an open truss structure made of cables and beams. This design allows wind to pass through. So, take this wind into consideration when styling your hair in the morning, as it may leave your hair wild and free!

Additionally, the wind chill can make it feel even colder, so it’s important to dress warmly to stay comfortable.

About the Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge a truly icon and probably the most famous bridge of New York City. The bridge was built in 1883, and was the first bridge to provide passage across the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, back when Brooklyn was still an independent city. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspending bridges in the US. At the time of its unveiling it was also the longest suspension bridge in the world. In fact, it was so long that people doubted its strength. In order to prove the bridge was safe, a circus promoter led a herd of 21 elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge!

The Brooklyn Bridge is perceived as one of the great engineering accomplishments of the 19th century. Its beautiful brick towers and Gothic arches have been the subjects of many photographs. The bridge has been featured in movies as The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and I Am Legend.

Outfit 2 – Camel Coat at the Manhattan Bridge

As the snow melts away, it’s time to start wearing some color in your wardrobe.

To visit the Manhattan Bridge I opted to wear my zara camel coat (similar here), a white button down shirt , my faux leather leggings , the New York Yankees baseball hat and of course my adidas court 2 sneakers.

Adding a Pop of Color

As the snow melts away, it’s time to add some color to your wardrobe. Incorporate bright and bold hues into your outfit with scarves, hats, coats or statement accessories. A faux fur jacket in a vibrant color can add a fun and playful touch to any outfit. Look for inspiration from the city’s street style, where fashionistas often mix and match bold colors and patterns to create unique and eye-catching looks. Whether it’s a bright red scarf or a pair of neon gloves, these pops of color can brighten up even the gloomiest of spring days.

About the Manhattan Bridge

The iconic Manhattan Bridge is a somewhat more modern suspension bridge. It was constructed in 1909. It was the last of the three bridges built over the lower East River, the second one being the Williamsburg Bridge. From the Brooklyn end, the Manhattan Bridge ends in the popular neighborhood DUMBO, which is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass.

The Famous Instagram spot at the Manhattan Bridge

Do not forget to stop by the Washington street in DUMBO to take the iconic instagram photo with the red brick buildings and the Manhattan Bridge on the background. Try to get there early to avoid the crowd.

Outfit 3 – Warm Afternoon at SOHO

Soho (South of  Houston Street) is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan in New York City. Soho is a fun place to go where you can find art galleries, good food and of course the most prestigious fashion designer houses. Mom and I visited SOHO in the afternoon and the temperature was around 68°F. That is what I am talking about! Therefore, I decided to wear a simple tank top, my favorite black trousers, and black pumps. I also took my camel coat in case the weather turned chilly and wore my Chanel 19 large size to complete the look. I prefered to dress a little bit more elevated since we were looking for a place to eat dinner in a nice place.
